Common questions

Is there any downtime?

You'll have visible healing for 7 to 14 days. The brows go dark and bold for the first 2 to 3 days, then flake and peel through days 3 to 7, followed by a lighter 'ghosting' phase before the true colour settles back in. Most people work as normal but avoid makeup on the brows and keep them completely dry for the first week.

Does it hurt?

It's quite manageable — we apply numbing cream before starting and top it up during, so most people describe it as a firm scratching or light scraping sensation rather than anything sharp. The brow bone can feel more sensitive toward the tail end.

How many sessions will I need?

This needs two sessions: the initial treatment plus a mandatory touch-up 4 to 8 weeks later to perfect the colour and fill any gaps from uneven healing. If you've got a wedding or a big event coming up, book the first session at least 12 weeks beforehand so everything's fully settled and looking its best.

How long do the results last?

You'll see the shape straight away, but the real colour blooms and settles at about 4 to 6 weeks once healing completes. From there it typically lasts 12 to 24 months, though oily skin, sun exposure and strong skincare acids can shorten that to 6 to 12 months.

Are there any side effects?

Expect some redness and swelling straight after, along with tenderness and tightness for a day or two. Scabbing and flaking is normal during healing, and the brows can itch as they settle. There's a small risk of infection if aftercare isn't followed, and pigment can heal unevenly or patchily — that's exactly why the touch-up session is essential. In rare cases, susceptible individuals can develop keloid scarring or react to the pigment.

Pre-treatment

  • No brow tinting for 2 weeks before — tinted hairs throw off colour matching
  • No waxing or threading for 1 week before — skin needs to be calm and unirritated
  • Stop retinol on the brow area 2 weeks before — it thins the skin and affects healing
  • No Botox in the forehead for 3 weeks before — muscles need to settle so brows map correctly
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy caffeine for 24 hours — they thin the blood and increase bleeding
  • Skip blood thinners like aspirin or ibuprofen for 1 week if medically safe — check with your GP

Post-treatment

  • Keep brows completely dry for 7 to 10 days — no water, steam or sweat on them
  • Apply healing serum in a microscopic layer only — never smother the skin
  • Do not pick at scabs or flakes — this pulls pigment out permanently
  • No makeup on the brows for 2 weeks — infection risk and pigment interference
  • Avoid swimming, saunas and the gym for 1 week — chlorine and sweat push pigment out
  • Stay out of direct sun for 4 weeks — UV fades pigment fast

Do not book if

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have uncontrolled diabetes or a bleeding disorder
  • You take blood-thinning medication that cannot be paused
  • You have a history of keloid scarring
  • You have eczema, psoriasis or active acne in the brow area
  • You've had chemical peels or laser treatment on the area recently
  • You've had chemotherapy or radiation within the last 6 months
  • You have certain autoimmune conditions or blood-borne viruses
  • You are allergic to lidocaine numbing cream or cosmetic pigments

How it compares

✅ Compared with Ombre Brows (1st Session)

  • How it looks — Hairstroke Brows draws individual hair-like strokes that look like real brow hairs you grew yourself; Ombre Brows (1st Session) builds soft pigment dots for a filled-in makeup look that stays put like powder.
  • How long it lasts — Hairstroke Brows typically lasts 12 to 24 months, or 6 to 12 months with oily skin or sun exposure; Ombre Brows (1st Session) typically lasts 2 to 3 years after the perfection session, depending on skin type and sun exposure.
  • Best for — Hairstroke Brows suits anyone with sparse or patchy brows wanting a naturally fuller look; Ombre Brows (1st Session) works reliably on all skin types, including oily or mature skin where strokes can blur.
  • Number of sessions — Hairstroke Brows needs two sessions: initial treatment plus a mandatory touch-up 4 to 8 weeks later; Ombre Brows (1st Session) needs two sessions: first session now, then a perfection session 6 to 8 weeks later.
  • Choose Hairstroke if you want brows that look like you grew them yourself; choose Ombre if you want longer-lasting definition or have oily skin

✅ Compared with Combination Brows (1st Session)

  • Look and finish — Hairstroke Brows creates purely natural brows throughout - every millimetre looks like individual hairs, not shaded makeup; Combination Brows (1st Session) blends fine hair-like strokes at the front with soft powder shading through the body and tail for definition and fullness.
  • How long it lasts — Hairstroke Brows typically lasts 12 to 18 months, with less staying power because there's no machine shading; Combination Brows (1st Session) typically lasts 18 to 24 months, with longer-lasting density through the tails.
  • Healing and aftercare — Hairstroke Brows has more delicate healing - pure hand-worked strokes can heal patchier than the blended technique; Combination Brows (1st Session) heals with 7 to 10 days of visible flaking and peeling, during which brows can look patchy and uneven.
  • Choose Hairstroke if you want the most undetectable, natural result everywhere; choose Combination if you want hair-like fronts with longer-lasting density through the tails

✅ Compared with Brows Colour Boost (6-12 Months)

  • Primary purpose — Hairstroke Brows builds your brows from nothing, creating entirely new shape and density with individual hair-like strokes; Brows Colour Boost (6-12 Months) is maintenance only for existing clients, topping up faded pigment from previous semi-permanent work.
  • Number of sessions — Hairstroke Brows needs two sessions: the initial treatment plus a mandatory touch-up 4 to 8 weeks later to perfect the colour and fill any gaps; Brows Colour Boost (6-12 Months) is a single appointment topping up faded pigment.
  • Best for — Hairstroke Brows is for anyone with sparse, over-plucked or patchy brows wanting them to look naturally fuller, or those who've never had semi-permanent brows; Brows Colour Boost (6-12 Months) is for existing clients only - not for new brows or complete reconstruction.
  • Choose Hairstroke if you have never had semi-permanent brows or want entirely new shape and density
